Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Flood.
Kristin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a teenager I started working at my aunt’s salon, helping shampoo and checking people into the tanning beds. When I got to high school there was a trade program where you could go to HS part time and Cosmetology part-time, but that wasn’t for me. I would miss all of the artsy classes that I actually liked about HS. I graduated and started Photography School because my parents wanted more for me than to do hair. I quickly dropped out and signed up for cosmetology school. I finished about a year later and started working for myself immediately. Over the last 17 years, I worked in big salons, managed a salon, rented chairs all over, and eventually moved to Chicago to open Rebelious Beauty!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m originally from Wilmington IL, about an hour south of Chicago. I moved around the country from Kansas City to IL, to 2 different cities in Florida, and back to Chicago. Building a clientele is hard!!!
Once I decided to move back to Chicago and open the salon, there were so many hoops to jump through in the city and state, I didn’t think I would ever open!
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rebellious Beauty Salon & Extension Boutique story. Tell us more about the business.
At the salon, I do the usual colors, cuts, highlights, updo’s, makeup, etc. My real specialty is Hair Extensions! I think what sets me apart from other stylists is that I am certified from just about any extension company I can find. Even if it’s to learn about a new method that I may never use, I just HAVE to know! Some stylists find one company and stick to that method even if it’s not right for the client just because that’s all they know. Not me 🙂
In addition to all the fabulous extension clients, my two best friends and I have a Bridal Hair & Makeup Business called We Only Do Pretty. We travel all over making brides fabulous for their big day!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck, that’s a hard one. I don’t really believe so much in luck as I do making things happen. People always say “oh, it will work it’s way out, it always does.” I dont think so. My philosophy is that things work out because there’s a driving force making things happen… or not! Things work out because I make them work out.
