Meet Kate Hendrickson of Kate Hendrickson Works of Art on Paper in Streeterville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Hendrickson.

Kate, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In a nut shell:

Studied and traveled abroad
Received MFA in drawing and printmaking
Taught at SAIC and Barat College
Worked at a couple galleries
Became an international art dealer
Traveled a lot to France and Italy to buy neat old works on paper
Transitioned to working with local artistic talent
Rediscovered my own talent

Now working full-time as an artist.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Recession, Recession, Recession and then Depression. I got through 3 recessions learning that having debt during the first was a struggle to keep the business alive. So for the second, I had no debt and for the third I had money set aside. The business of selling fine prints, watercolors, drawings, etc. was really good. And then…starting in 2007, the 4th economic turn down arrived and this was a depression for mid-range galleries where it did not matter how much money was set aside. I was already in re-evaluation mode since I had returned to making artwork after 30 plus years absence.

The biggest struggle was to abandon the old business. I had spent half of my life building it. I was spending a huge amount of time and energy promoting the vintage artwork as well as the artwork by the local talent with whom I was working. It was pointed out to me that perhaps I should be putting all that energy into promoting myself and my artwork. The answer was right there for the next phase in my life.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kate Hendrickson Works of Art on Paper – what should we know?
Kate Hendrickson Works of Art on Paper now specializes in my artwork which encompasses sumi-e ink collages, graphite drawings, sumi-e ink drawings, conte crayon drawings and other miscellaneous works on paper that are inspired by either shells and the zone between water and the water’s edge or the love of bicycling.

I strive to provide individualized service and feel that purchasing fine art online for either home or office is too impersonal. I work by appointment only.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Determination, Perseverance, Positive Attitude.
