Meet Karsten Runquist of Karsten Runquist in Buena Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karsten Runquist.

Karsten, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started making YouTube videos where I would analyze different film and TV in my dorm my freshman year. I treated it very casually, not expecting it to go anywhere but still making sure I did a good job on the videos. They gained a little bit of attention over time but it wasn’t until about 5 months later (August) that one of them really started getting views and people started watching. After that, I started taking it pretty seriously and calling myself a “YouTuber”, as lame as that sounds, and here we are today.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a relatively smooth road, yeah. I thankfully haven’t run into too many copyright problems or anything like that. The views are incredibly inconsistent so there’s always that stress over whether or not a video will do well. Besides that, it has been a blast.

Please tell us about Karsten Runquist.
My “business” is a self-titled YouTube channel where I talk about film and television whether that be analyzing, reviewing, ranting, or just appreciating. I’m known for a little bit of all of those, some people know me for reviews, others for essays, and some for rants. I’m most proud of my ability to have a variety of different types of videos rather than just one. I’m able to have fun in some (my video on the 2005 film Robots being one of them), and very serious in others (my video on Call Me By Your Name). I would say that’s what sets me apart from other film channels. Too many channels try really hard to be super serious all the time or try hard to just be goofy but I feel like I bring this sense of balance to my content.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory would have to be making a stop-motion animation documentary on LEGO with my dad. It was the first “film” I ever made and inspired me to go into this field.
