Meet Julie Dietz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Dietz.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I chose photography as a career because it gives me the chance to capture moments in time and share my own perspective. Photography is such a gift, being able to send a gorgeous landscape view to friends and family, or sharing the magical “I do” moment with loved ones. I get to give that gift with every flash of the camera and there is no greater feeling. There are no rules in photography, just freedom to express and let your images speak to people however they will … a true definition of art.

My varied experiences have changed the way I look at the world, and the way I photograph it. After earning my degree in photography from the University of Illinois, including spending six months shooting in Italy, I worked in Chicago for eight years where I balanced freelance with building and running the in-house photo studio at Groupon. I returned to my hometown of Chicago last year to run my photography business full time after spending a year traveling throughout Southeast Asia. I now balance my full time business with being a mom to a beautiful baby boy.

Please tell us about your art.
I am primarily a wedding and portrait photographer. I love working with and connecting with people in a way that makes them comfortable in front of the camera. My work ranges from capturing the unbridled joy of a couple of their wedding day, to soothing a newborn, to finding common interests with a seasoned businessman. I hope to take away inspiration and new perspectives from each person I photograph. I also have a passion for travel, and that gives me a chance to capture landscapes and the culture that surrounds me. Travel photography offers a different challenge because it is just me and my surroundings – I have to connect with the world around me in order to capture how I feel in that moment.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
At first, don’t be afraid to book work that you aren’t familiar with. You’ll learn something new, and will only help you grow as an artist and expert, but will also help your finances. Prioritize what you need, but also remember to step back for self care and reflect on the joy you find in your work.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can see my work on my website (www.juliedietz.com), on my blog (www.juliedietz.blog), or on my Instagram (@julie.d.dietz).
