Meet Julie Burt Nichols of Twiniversity in North Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Burt Nichols.

Julie Burt, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I teach the Twiniversity classes in Chicago. I started teaching the Twiniversity expecting twins classes in the fall of 2015. Natalie Diaz founded Twiniversity in NYC and I’ve branched out her curriculum to the Chicago area. Here’s a little background on how Natalie started Twiniversity.

After Natalie Diaz had her twins in 2004, she was shocked by the lack of resources available to families of multiples. Magazines, websites, and television shows all seemed to focus on “singleton” families. As a full time mom, Natalie vowed that once her twins started Kindergarten, if no one had started giving twin families access to more information, she would do it herself. So proudly in the fall of 2009, after no one had organized twin parents, Natalie got on a soap box and started a twin parenting revolution called Twiniversity. She wanted to make ONE website that parents of multiples could turn to for information and community. With the mission of connecting, educating and making parents see the comical side of having twins, Twiniversity succeeds tenfold.

Now reaching over 2 million families a year in over 150 countries, Twiniversity is the largest global resource for all things “twinnie”. With worldwide recognition in her field, Natalie Diaz brings her twin parenting expertise to our online resource, our parent to parent forums, our live and online expecting twins classes, our social media channels, and her bestselling book “What To Do When You’re Having Two“.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been relatively smooth, thanks in large part to Natalie’s fantastic curriculum that has been tested over the past 7 years with the expecting twin families in NYC. There’s really nothing else like this class in the Chicago area and I knew it would strike a chord with moms and dads expecting twins. I knew that if this class existed when I was pregnant with my twins I would have signed up in a heartbeat.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Twiniversity – what should we know?
Twiniversity expecting twins classes are a lifeline for parents expecting twins. The classes offer insider knowledge on what you need to do to prepare for twins, what you need to buy (and what you don’t), and what to expect once you bring your dynamic duo home. But it’s also a place for connection and support. My students tend to stay in touch, forming their own “twin clubs” of sorts. There’s nothing else like the support of another parent of twins, and you really can’t fully understand what it’s like to be a parent of twins unless you’ve been there. I also tell all of my students that they can call me anytime if they ever have questions in the future; I want them to know that the support from Twiniversity doesn’t end when class is over. As a mom to 4 year old twins boys, I bring all of that personal experience with me to class, in addition to all the experiences of our Twiniversity community. I have heard so many stories and learned so many tips and tricks from our amazing online community over the past 4 years as Editor-in-Chief of Twiniversity.com, and I’m sharing all of that information with my students in Chicago. There’s no one right way to raise twins, and my job is to offer as many ideas and tips as I can to help parents make their own decisions when the time comes.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Natalie Diaz is the founder and CEO of Twiniversity and she has crafted the Twiniversity expecting twins classes from YEARS of teaching and leadership in local and state mothers of multiples organizations.
