Today we’d like to introduce you to Jules Kennedy.
Jules, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was drawn to art from a very young age. I began to draw, then paint, then stumbled upon photography during my early college years. My worldview immediately began to change. I started documenting my perspective through the lens of my camera. I quickly fell in love with the art and graduated with a degree in Photojournalism from Indiana University. I moved to Chicago to pursue life in the creative world and began reaching out to bloggers and influencers to collaborate. Word quickly spread of my photo services and soon my business was born. I am 2 years and 4 months into this whole freelance thing and finally feel like I’m starting to get the hang of it. My greatest joy is creating images that have life…images that express real emotion and authentic moments. I feel so grateful to have a job that allows me to do this and so much more.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a lot harder than I was anticipating. There are a lot of things to juggle and keep organized especially since I’m operating my business solo. I am more of a creative brain so I don’t particularly enjoy having to sit down and work on the business side of things. I would much rather be out shooting. Thankfully, things have gone relatively smoothly, and I’ve been able to learn and grow as I go. I always try to remind myself that as long as I’m doing my best, everything else will fall into place.
Please tell us about Jules Kennedy Photography.
I am a photographer based in Chicago specializing in portrait, lifestyle, and travel photography. I work with many influencers and bloggers as well as brands local to Chicago. I really love working with people and making my clients feel calm and confident in front of the camera. As a part-time yoga instructor, I like to incorporate a more mindfulness approach to my business by creating an experience that is fun, innovative, and impactful. Human connection is one of my deepest values and something I consistently strive for when I create.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have taken a business class! Any sort of education on running your own business, managing an income and outcome, taxes, contracts, etc. would have been a good place to start before diving in head first 🙂
