Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Holmes.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am originally from P.G. County Maryland, right outside of DC. I grew up as the youngest boy with all sisters (5 and now 8 if you include my stepsisters). I started writing music around 15 and have kept up the skillset ever since. It wasn’t until 2014 when I moved to Chicago that I choose to pursue music with a full-fledged career intention.
Upon reflection, I realized that I wanted to create something larger than myself with my music image and soon to be company ONLi Packs which I now realize is a culmination of all my skills learned over time. I grew up a pretty inquisitive brain building and taking apart things to see how they work. I eventually found my way to the sciences and majored in Materials Science Engineering at Virginia Tech. In that time I researched at Howard University, Johns Hopkins, and the University of Washington and became a published scientific author.
At Virginia Tech I met my mentor Nikki Giovanni who encourages my entrepreneurial endeavors and calls me her literary son. We have performed together at the promontory, visited Ghana and performed at the U.S. embassy. She continues to guide and support making sure I stay aware on my internal why as an artist and person. My stage name Dxtr Spits (Dexter) stands for designed eXperimentation transcending reality, which means to live life like and experiment and become the product you want to become.
After working in Engineering and large scale businesses I realized that I could create the existence I want as a positive community member and business owner so I went 1000 percent in pursuit of doing so. I brainstormed by reflecting on who I was, what I knew, and what social groups I was a part of to properly find my “Why”. I eventually reformed by brand as Dxtr Spits and established ONLi Packs.
A backpack company that uses prints designed by local artists for the modern creative and dream chaser. They are a bridge of the arts and sciences and a reminder to keep people creating.
Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not. One struggle was digging myself out of wasting so much time before I turned 22. I had a tumor in my chest in my teens and became very depressed because of it. I acted out, hung with people I shouldn’t have, and did things I shouldn’t have been doing. I eventually recovered from my depression and the tumor was benign.
Once I realized how much time I wasted, I went in full pursuit of recovering my time, became and engineer, musician, and business owner. Also when starting the bag company I have made 1000 mistakes.
Including getting specs wrong and ordering bags that were HUUGGEEEE. Laughably huge. I had to take a deep breath, remember that it’s a marathon and not a sprint. We got it right…… eventually hahaha!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with ONLi Packs / Dxtr Spits – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Onli Packs (More at www.onlipacks.com):
Onlipacks is a backpack company that uses prints from local Chicago for the modern creative and dream chaser. We give proceeds to the artists whose prints are used and filter/donate the bags for the uplifting organization in the arts, sciences, and self-care fields. We are known for having amazing prints and connecting the community in creative ways. For instance our ONLi Arts and Science event which brought together a room of artists and scientists to do an experiment and have a facilitated discussion.
We believe in connecting stories and my favorite/most proud part of the company is that factor alone. The bags are dynamic, fashionable, and functional. They are always a conversation starter and bring people together just by being in the room. The logo uses the periodic table of elements to show a dab of science on a work of art. The O is for Operational, fashion meeting functionality, N is for Narrative, all the connected stories, and L & I are for Love and Inspiration to keep the wearer motivated to keep grinding and shining.
Dxtr Spits (More at www.dxtrspits.com):
In true nerd fashion, Dxtr continues to embark on a lifelong experiment of truth and social awareness. A scientist by day, Dxtr is comfortable experimenting with materials and concepts and it shows in his artistic product. He is mentored by Dr. Nikki Giovanni who encourages him to grow artistically while continuing community involvement. He does so by speaking at schools to the youth about realizing potential, constructing safe space forums for community members to openly discuss controversial topics, and creates socially impactful poetry and music.
In 2017 he founded and launched ONLi Packs a backpack company that uses prints designed by local Chicago Artists. Between his many projects, he acts as the co-chair of amfm (founded by Ciera Mckissick), where he aims to provide platforms for other performers and creatives. In his live performance, he uses elements of his Mad Science Showcases, where he is painted in neon body paint while performing with his backing band, The Devonns. Welcome to his lab experiment gone wrong.
Recent Music Release:
Jordan Holmes, otherwise known as Dxtr Spits (pronounced Dexter), is the owner and creator of ONLi Packs and a charismatic artist looking to transcend reality by experimenting with his listeners. He is gearing up to release “Let it Ring ” on March 8th, the first single and music video of his 2018 series, “The Rise Collection”. The series will be a culmination of experimental music videos and tracks centered around Dxtrs experiences finding ways to elevate personally, professionally, artistically, and financially.
“Let it Ring “, the first of The Rise Collection was produced and tracked locally by Caleb Harris of “The Pact”. The song and video features ethereal and rich vocal stylings by Simonexus J., a rising Chicago artist with an eclectic and smoky sound. Collective efforts gave rise to this reflective testimony about vanquishing all forms of ringing thoughts- from the inner doubts and external criticisms to the leech-like bystanders lurking.
This self-proclaimed “nerd anthem” champions the decision to be unapologetic in putting your own dreams in center focus. The eerily electronic layers do well in allowing Dxtr’s tactfully turbulent lyricism a place to shine in this head-bobbing hit.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the community, how small the world is here, and how much genuine support and love is shown here. It helps to keep us motivated when times are tough. I also love the food cuz I am a fat boy at heart.
I dislike the segregation and inequality in many facets of the government, economy, and school systems, but that is what we hope to address. We want Onli Packs and Dxtr to grow to have enough influence and financial support to create substantial change through informative knowledge/skill sharing, urban farming and infrastructure building, and good old fashion love for people.
