Meet Irwin Silbernik of Silbernik Music Academy in North Shore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Irwin Silbernik.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Irwin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started studying piano at the age of 7 with a piano instructor from the American Conservatory of Music, and began to study percussion at the age of 12. Throughout high school I played in the school bands, jazz bands, orchestras, accompanied the choir, and played in outside theater group musicals.

After high school, I majored in piano and instrumental music at DePaul University and the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana. I received my Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Illinois in 1974 and my Master’s degree a year later, in 1975. I began substitute teaching instrumental music in the Champaign/Urbana school systems while working on my Master’s degree.

After receiving my degrees, I ran the music programs for a small town in western Illinois. It was during this time that I began to study the guitar so that I could interact more efficiently with the students in my music classes. After teaching in public school systems, I went to work at Karnes Music Company in Des Plaines, Illinois as a guitar instructor.

For the past 15 years, I have been playing in various Chicago area venues. In 2015 I started the Silbernik Music Academy, which provides Guitar, Piano and Ukulele instruction to students from age 6 to adults.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been smooth, but growth has been slower than expected.
