Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginger Lu.
Ginger, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started this website as a way for me to express myself. I’ve always wanted to move to NYC, thinking of Chicago as “not enough going on” in terms of art, music, or culture. However, after starting to blog about amazing artists, creators, and entertainers living out their dreams. I began to recognize that Chicago had so much more to offer me than what I could see on the surface. This blog basically documents my own journey in how I express myself – from fashion to music to fine arts. It’s about what interests me and people caught onto it.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No of course not! When most people think about Instagram, they see someone posting a sponsored picture and living a fake life. It’s not like that. A ton of effort and hard work goes into making it. #1 the market is incredibly saturated with creators that have unlimited talent, all in competition with one another so getting your voice out there is so hard in the beginning. I struggled with this when I saw success in other people as my competition. I didn’t start to grow myself until I stopped comparing my success to others and just started focusing on me and what I wanted to see on my page. That’s when this all came together.
Please tell us about Mei-mei.
I’m a high-end fashion/lifestyle blogger. I create content for brands in the forms of photos, videos, and interactive experiences like popup shops and hosted events. I think I’m different than a lot of fashion bloggers that focus on luxury because of my love for streetwear. I’m super into brands like YSL and Chanel, but the stores I spend the most time in are RSVP and Boneyard so I think that helps give my looks a less girly vibe.- It makes it more me.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would’ve planned more in this. I would’ve definitely started off and been more consistent with my posts and my photos. Now I know what to look for in terms of spacing, lighting, etc. Also with collaborations. Knowing my worth! I accepted a partnership with a brand that asked for 4 posts in exchange for product. Now, looking back I know I was being taken advantage of so knowing my worth is a huge one.
