Meet Geneva Currin of Halsted Flowers in Lincoln Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Geneva Currin.

Geneva, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Flowers always called to me from the time I was a girl. My grandparents lived in the city but kept a small farm in a rural area where we kids would spend time on some weekends and holidays. They kept an orchard and grew flowers on the farm and this was pretty much where my passion for nature began. Our grandmother would show us how to gather and hand-tie bouquets that we would place around the house. We also worked the farm and helped tend to the plants and flowers. Years later, as an adult who felt like a square peg in a round hole in the corporate world, I left and pursued a career in the floral industry.

Having owned 3 flowers shops for 25 years in total (sold 2 after operating each for several years and moving out of state) we’re back with our 3rd shop now and going strong in our 5th year. We are happy to serve our community and the surrounding Chicago area by designing bouquets with our interesting, beautiful flowers and lovely plants that we carry at the shop. We focus on locally grown, organic fair trade flowers, plants and gift items. Our website is halstedflowers.com and we have an on-line shop on our website as well.

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting any small business has its struggles and we definitely had ours! It was very difficult to get or shop off the ground, but with time, hard work and a proven past track record, we are getting recognition now as one of the top Chicago flower shops.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Our industry has changed a lot and it unfortunately is not a growing industry with the influx of big box stores and grocery stores flooding the market for the last 25 years. We are a niche shop and design for all occasions including weddings, events, corporate work, sympathy flowers as well as daily bouquets for birthdays, anniversaries and thank yous.
