Meet Faith Latorre, Graphic Designer and Artist in Logan Square

Today we’d like to introduce you to Faith Latorre.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Faith. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I professionally stand where I physically find myself sitting at this very moment- behind a computer screen. Most of my creative labor used to begin here. I would meticulously put mathematics and geometry into what I was creating, create a computer-generated blueprint for everything, and then bust it out into a painting or illustration. I think that because of this, I ventured away from the fine arts world for a bit, and found myself pursuing graphic design. With a spontaneous move to Chicago, I started hand-lettering chalkboards, and whatdoyaknow, I was kind of good at it. Physically drawing lines and shapes into letters turned out to be something I genuinely enjoy. After realizing that this skill-set can be used in design, I’ve married the two together, and now design type and layouts.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think it took a while for me to realize that design isn’t always clean and corporate, and that art doesn’t have to be a (mostly) screen-free universe. Looking back, the internal struggle of wanting to create art independently and believing that design would get me to the professional platform I’ve been striving for tended to set up personal barriers. I appreciate the kind of design work that has a human-quality to it now – there’s something magical in going from a word or phrase popping into my head to seeing it transform into something tangible. It’s incredibly satisfying. So yeah, it took a little while and a couple of jobs that weren’t the right fit- but with some mental reconfigurations and some much needed inspiration, there’s definitely more to come, but I’ll still be creating along the way.

Please tell us about your business.
I’m currently a production and graphic designer – I specialize in hand-created typography and type-setting. I also freelance logos and branding. I create branding solely using physical hand-lettering and illustration which can give clients a unique style.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Networking was something I never was keen to when starting out. I had this determination of getting myself to where I wanted to be independently. Knowing that the balance of self-reliance and making valuable connections (especially in the art world!) is a valuable lesson I wouldn’t mind going back and whispering into 23-year old me’s ear.
