Today we’d like to introduce you to Elliot Greenberg.
Elliot, President & CEO of the JC Licht company, truly was born with paint in his veins. He rules by the idea to “love thy customer”, and expects the same passion from every employee.
Elliot worked for his family’s paint company straight out of college for 17 years. In 1994, he went to work at Rings End in Connecticut to build the paint side of the business. He was so successful on the paint side that he was promoted to VP of Sales and Operations for all of Rings End in 2000.
In 2014 Elliot saw an opportunity to purchase Benjamin Moore’s Illinois based chain with 30 locations. He saw a vision of what JC Licht/Epco could do to grow, so in January 2015 he moved forward with the purchase of the chain and simplified the name to JC Licht. Although he left his position at Rings End where he is highly respected by his colleagues and the industry, he decided to stay on with them as a consultant.
With his vision of JC Licht’s opportunity to grow in the marketplace, in August of 2015 he purchased Reliable Finishes, a professional wood coatings business, and renamed it Reliable Finishes a division of JC Licht.
In November of 2015 Elliot decided to move JC Licht’s corporate office, warehouse and a new store to a 38,000 square foot facility in Addison. In June of 2015 JC Licht purchased 2 more locations in Chicagoland, Figatner Scott in Berwyn and Terrace Paint in Villa Park.
With Elliot at the helm, JC Licht will continue to purchase existing Benjamin Moore Paint retailers or build new locations. JC Lichts 36th location is under construction in Orland Park and will open this Fall.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s a challenge every day. We have 250 employees and keeping them engaged and motivated is of the utmost importance. Changing the culture of the company I purchased has been my priority.
JC Licht – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We sell paint and decorating products to painters/homeowners and commercial installation. We are known for our great products led by Benjamin Moore paint and our experienced and professional team. We also have a great diversity of products.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The best part of the city is the people. Well educated and really nice. The challenge is the difficulty of doing business with over reach on multiple regulations taxes and fees. It is also difficult to do any renovations and build-outs within the city limits.
