Today we’d like to introduce you to David Lampert.
David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Lester Lampert is a 4th generation Chicago custom design jewelry house. I became a Graduate Gemologist to better understand the industry prior to joining my Father Lester over 30 years ago. During that time we’ve moved twice, once back in 1993 over to Oak Street and then again last year to our new “Spot” at 7 East Huron Street. What makes us special is that both my Father and I are hands-on jewelry designers. From there we create almost everything in house. Most recently we won an industry award for being the “Coolest Store” in 2017.
Has it been a smooth road?
Our industry is always changing but we’ve managed to stay on top of new trends and technology. A little over 10 years ago I started using CAD software to design jewelry. Shorty thereafter we bought our first 3D printer for actually growing our own models for production. It’s not unusual today to even to a FaceTime session with a client to show them the processes as we make their special piece.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lester Lampert story. Tell us more about the business.
What I’m most proud is our ability to design a piece of fine jewelry that is exactly what someone has in their mind and bringing that vision to life. My Father and I both have had patents issued for jewelry related products. We also create fun jewelry. We believe in creating happy memories and enjoying the finer things in life. We aren’t a nose in the air type of store… we try to make the experience of acquiring a fine piece of jewelry or a watch fun and memorable.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Fortunately, I believe people will always adorn themselves with jewelry. Currently, the trend feels like it is going to be more conservative, simple and elegant but not too showy. Quality will always be in style. The huge quantity of available styles and materials won’t change, but the better pieces will certainly be what is most desirable down the road. That is why I feel strongly about going to a jewelry house that has a fine reputation. It is important to know who you are dealing with, someone who can guide you properly through the process and explain all the little details about quality that only a fine jeweler understands.
