Meet David Hernandez of Still & Motion Media in West Suburb

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Hernandez.

David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started with a dream. Ever since I was a little boy I would grab my father’s camera and play with it as if I was taking photos. Then I migrated to the US when I was in elementary school and left my father’s camera behind. Once I got to high school, I took a photography class as an elective and my love for it was revived with inspiration hanging on my classroom walls of the Great Master of photography Ansel Adams.

My teacher told me I had an eye for photography, and recommended me to pursue a career in photography. I then went to Morton College for an AFA, and then to Columbia College for my BA in photography. After Columbia, like many photographers, was working as a freelance photographer, and along the way, met and made many great long lasting clients, and continue to do so. In 2012 I decided to open up my own business, and created Still & Motion Media. I came up with that name because at that point of my career I loved both photography, and video, so I continued to do both.

5 years later, here we are. I’ve created my own team of photographers and videographers which I teach them all my knowledge of the art. Now we create stills and or motion assignments for many P.R agencies, Real estate, Sports, and of course Weddings. And since 2012, I haven’t worked a day in my life. My name is David, I have 3 kids, and I’m married to my beautiful college crush and I am a professional photographer/videographer/editor.

Has it been a smooth road?
Never a smooth road. Every day is a struggle, but I figure it out.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Still & Motion Media story. Tell us more about the business.
We create Still and or Motion assignments for many P.R. agencies, real estate, publications, product, and weddings. What sets my company apart is that I have a genuine care of my clients. If they are not happy, I’m not happy and I do whatever it takes to make them happy. What I’m proud of is that I have tripled the growth of my company since conception with no education on business management

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see it becoming a lot more competitive as gear becomes more accessible, and education for the art is almost free. People don’t have to go to college to do what I do. I have a lot of friends who have successful business in photography and have not 1 college credit. Trend coming to the field are Aerial photography.
