Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Miller.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Over 6 years, I recruited for a headhunting agency and moved up the ladder into corporate training and management. Then in 2009, I was hired by an eCommerce startup, BuyHappier.com (Now called Digital Brandworks) that literally only had a business plan and yet to open an office. I came on board as employee #2 and built an office up to 40+ employees and we were featured on the Inc 500 as one of America’s fastest-growing companies. We were on the WGN news Around Town segment due to the culture we built, modeled after Zappos. Once the company sold, many organizations found out about my success building up the BuyHappier office, and I was getting calls left and right by startup owners looking to build teams.
In 2012, I was way too busy and needed help, as running a one-man recruiting operation was not too efficient. I brought on board my sister, Sarah Yeverovich, who was the #1 Sales Territory Manager for Cengage Learning, a billion dollar publishing firm. She was the perfect person to manage all the clients and build our client roster. Together we started Empowered Staffing and have grown to service companies nationwide within eCommerce/Retail, Tech/SAAS, Digital Marketing, Manufacturing, and Healthcare. We have a team of recruiters based in Evanston and have experienced growth between 20-150% YOY since our start.
Has it been a smooth road?
We have experienced a lot of struggles in the first two years of business. We had to invest a lot of our earnings into systemizing our organization and buying the right resources in order to continue growth. Investing in Technology and Resources was extremely expensive for a startup recruiting firm, but due to that investment, it allowed us to focus in on offering our clients the best candidates for their open roles due to us allocating the proper resources for each open role.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Empowered Staffing story. Tell us more about the business.
We have worked with some of the world’s largest organizations and specialize in hiring mid to executive level talent. We know what it takes to create an all-star team. Servicing our candidates and clients with the highest level of respect, strategy and transparency have led Empowered Staffing to become a leader in the recruitment and staffing industry.
We offer Corporate Contingency Recruiting, Recruitment Process Outsourcing, and Contract Staffing. Our recruiting team specializes in the following areas: eCommerce & Retail, SaaS/Technology, Digital Marketing, Manufacturing & Healthcare. Our clients recognize that hiring the right individual goes above and beyond the resume and that is why we are here. We make sure to have very detailed and long conversations with each candidate to understand their professional and personal motivations in life. This ensures that each candidate presented to our clients is a fit from a personal and professional perspective.
Before partnering with any potential client, we look at company culture, management style, growth opportunities and the overall compensation/benefits package to ensure our candidate’s success and happiness.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next 5-10 years, there will be an even greater war on talent. The best companies are literally up against each other in interview processes. Candidates are interviewing with a multitude of companies and each of them is competing for that candidate. Companies have to be more aggressive than ever with quick turn around interview processes & with offer letters that truly move the best talent.
Culture, Opportunity for growth and the ability to have a say versus just being a number are big trends of today. I think the trends of the future within the recruiting industry will tend towards companies revitalizing employee perks and benefits, opportunities to work remotely for more roles and the overall recruiting process will be changed into more technology-based interviewing, e.g. Skype interviews versus in-person meetings, etc.
In the next 5-1- years, Job-hopping will also be a lot more common, as we are already seeing in many industries. Professionals are realizing the only way to grow in compensation and responsibility is to be actively recruited out by competitor companies that are offering comp/benefit packages to make the transition. The only candidates who will probably not be as active in job jumping are those in sales type roles with strong commission opportunities.
