Meet Colin Hinkle of Soaring Badger Productions in River North

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Hinkle.

Colin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I got my start in television news in 2000. I have been working in Chicago for ABC 7 and CBS 2 for the last 10+ years as a news videographer. I became interested in aerial photography about 6 years ago after working with the news helicopters and after purchasing a few different drones began my business in 2014.

Today I still work for the local news stations as a videographer/aerial photographer but also have a successful drone business as well. Soaring Badger continues to grow and expand each year as more clients become interested in the technology.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road. The ever-changing landscape of rules and regulations for drones continues to change and can at times cause roadblocks. I find the best thing to do is be honest with potential clients about the limitations of what drones can provide and work with them to get the best possible footage within the current regulations.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Soaring Badger Productions provides aerial video and photos for a multitude of different applications. One day we may get hired to get photos of a new condo building being built and the next working with a film crew for a network TV show. We are known for quality and experience.

There are plenty of new drone operators with no experience in photography or production. We have won several Emmy’s for our work in local television news and all of our operators are trained UAV pilots and experienced photographers. Our work always speaks for itself when compared to others.

What were you like growing up?
I have been interested in photography since I was a young child. I would often borrow my dad’s cameras and practice as a child. From there I became interested in video and have been continuing to explore new ways to capture our world since then. Drones were a logical step of progression as they opened up a whole new way of viewing the world around us from above.
