Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Lavidas.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was in college, I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I wanted to tie my passion for playing the drums into starting a business. It all started off producing an instructional drum video in January 2003. Upon completion of the video, I applied some of the business principles I was learning in school to selling this instructional video. I realized that I had to do more than merely sell a video, so I prepared a format to give drum lessons. I acquired my first student in the fall of 2003. I started giving lessons in my parents’ basement with only 1 drum set, a few pairs of sticks, a couple instructional books, and a practice pad on a piano stool. Through marketing and building relationships with local music stores, I built up my student base over the next couple of years. When I completed my undergraduate degree, I decided to pursue an MBA with a concentration in management to acquire more business and entrepreneurial skills. During this time of acquiring my MBA, I worked vigorously building up my student base. At this time, people suggested that I tap into the senior market, so I also developed a drumming circle program. I worked for free and did a number of volunteer events to get my name out and this ultimately led to the expansion of this part of my business. Today, I have a full-service music school in Arlington Heights, where we provide music lessons in all the main instruments. I also have another division in my business called, Breaking Grounds in Drumming, where we work with senior homes, nursing care facilities, schools, and other organizations all around the Chicago-land area. We provide drum circles, drum therapy, presentations, and other programs that can be tailored to fit the needs of that organization.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not a smooth road. There were certainly many bumps in the road. There was rejection from clients while I was cold calling to provide my services. We also encountered some challenges in getting a commercial space. Finally, it took time to screen and acquire other talented/like-minded teachers and facilitators who had strong work ethics, and shared in the same vision of my company.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Breaking Grounds in Music – what should we know?
I have two divisions under one entity: Breaking Grounds in Music. This is my music school where we provide music lessons, master classes, and music recitals to students of all ages. I also have Breaking Grounds in Drumming where we offer drum circles, drum therapy, presentations, and other customized programs to various organizations all around the Chicago-land area (e.g., senior homes, schools, etc.). We separate ourselves from our competition by adding value to what we do. This is done by differentiating our services to best fit the needs of everyone we work with. Whether we are working for an organization or an individual student, we customize our services to meet and exceed the expectations of our clients and students. Furthermore, we take a vested interest in the music education and quality character in our students. We recently have implemented master class on various subjects, including: Productive Practicing and Music Theory base classes. These classes will continue to expand into other subjects that are vital in the student’s musical and personal life. Finally, our prices are also very affordable and we have a very fair policy on cancellations. We know families lead busy lives, so we want to be fair and understanding.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Truthfully, I don’t believe in luck. I am a follower of Jesus Christ and give Him all the glory. I am only here by His grace. If it wasn’t for the Lord’s provision and guidance in my life, I would never be where I’m at.
