Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Pickman.
Caleb, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m from a small town in Kansas called Atchison. When I was 12 years old, I got hurt playing football. My shoulder injury healed but still having issues. My Doctor requests I had an MRI of my brain, the MRI took about an hour, after that hour my life changed. My doctor informed me I had a softball sized brain tumor and was rushed to Children’s Mercy Hospital. The very next morning, I had to have a 7-hour brain operation to remove the tumor. The next year, I went through radiation and another brain operation. It was apparent to me my life would be different and I would no longer be able to play football and that is when I found my love for photography.
My love for photography grew over the years. After high school, I attended Hallmark Institute of Photography in Turners Falls, MA. In 2009, I graduated and moved back to Atchison to start Pickman Photography in 2010. In 2012, I moved to Kansas City to expand my business. I fell in love with wedding photography and made it my goal to become the best wedding photographer I could be! Years past and I improved my craft. In 2016, I decided I wanted to expand to the Chicago metro and shoot weddings in both Kansas City and Chicago. I’ve lived in Logan Square the past 2 years and have enjoyed every second I’ve been in Chicago! I look forward to growing my business here in Chicago and Downtown has become my absolute favorite place for wedding photography! I have been lucky enough to become a preferred photographer at my 2 favorite venues, Carnivale in the West Loop, Revolution Brewery, and hope to add many more!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a challenging journey but that has made it fun! Due to the brain operations, I had in my early teens I lost most movement in my left arm. Being a one arm photographer has endless challenges but I truly think that is why my work is unique! I’ve learned was to turn what most people would consider a disadvantage into an advantage!
Please tell us about Pickman Photography.
Pickman Photography is a photography and videography company that specializes in capturing weddings. I think we are known for our unique style and treating each wedding as it was our very own. I’m very proud of the fact that most of my clients become lifelong friends!
What sets us apart from other wedding photography companies is the fact we do both photography and videography and I’m personally at every wedding.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My mom worked in the IT department at a Credit Union, they had a take your kids to work day! I remember when I got to visit the marketing and design department and see photoshop for the 1st time, they showed me how to take a picture of myself and add a 3rd eye in photoshop haha, for whatever reason I thought it was the coolest!
