Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As long as I can remember I loved styling hair. Although most hairstylists might have started by experimenting with their Barbie Dolls, I did not. When I was a teen, I experimented with my own hair! This lead to a few questionable hairstyles that I regret, but to me, hair is a fashion statement and I love making a statement regardless if it was a great choice or not. I have an Aunt in the industry, who would take me to her work events. At the time, she had a big creative role, working at Pivot Point International (where I received my cosmetology degree). I fondly remember going to industry parties and being completely enamored with the hairstyles, the fashion, the people and the ambience. Everything about it screamed, “This is what I want to do!” It was then that I decided to make my dream career into a reality. I have since been in the industry for 18 years.
Has it been a smooth road?
Overall, I have to say that the passion that I had when I first started has evolved and grown throughout the years. It has been a pretty smooth, creative road with of course, life changing seasons. When I graduated Pivot Point and received my license, I started working at a salon located in the heart of Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. I owe my love for knowledge and continuing education to the amazing advance training opportunities the owner had provided us. He would bring in talented renown artist to the salon to train us, and I was also able to travel and study several times in the high fashion worlds of New York and London. I spent half my career in that salon, but made the decision to move when my now hubby of 14 years and I did the “adult” thing and bought a home in the burbs. I was a senior hair stylist in a salon nearby for a few years, then the season of life changed yet again, when I had our baby boy (who is now 8 years-old) and suddenly my motherly love could not go back full time. My priorities shifted, but fortunately the universe did its thing again, and aligned itself to my benefit. It just so happened that a great stylist friend was in that transition of becoming a mother herself, and she needed another independent contractor to temporarily work on her clientele and business while she was away on maternity leave. I was so grateful because working as an independent contractor opened up my world to becoming my own boss.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Artistry Hair by Jess – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am the owner and my very own boss of “Artistry Hair by Jess”. With two precious kids, I am so fortunate to have my salon studio at home. I absolutely love it! My clients love it as well; I receive so many wonderful compliments that they know the service will always be personable and individualized. I keep busy with my amazing clientele and onsite wedding hair service but have also been collaborating with so many talented artists including photographers, makeup artist, wedding decor specialist, special custom cake artist and more. I am so beyond grateful to be able to be there for my family, and still be able to contribute financially.             What sets me apart from others is the ability to listen to my client and create. I was told from my mentor that I was the Frida Khalo of hair. The language of creating a hairstyle whether it be a haircut, color, updo styles comes very naturally to me. I don’t like to say I specialize in anything particular because I can honestly say that I LOVE doing it all and I am very comfortable doing so. I have a broad range of haircutting skills, from chic straight A-Line Bob to a straight blade razor trendy cut to free handing naturally curly hair and everything in between. As for color, I have been doing extensive amount of training to perfect the Balayage look and keeping up with the latest trends with Babylights/Balayage Combo, Babylights/Ombre Combo and the trendy fashion color placements, but I am a firm believer knowing how to precisely apply the basic single process color, all over color, partial highlights, full head highlights is just as important.
I also love styling special occasion hair, especially wedding parties. It fills me with excitement to be part of such a wonderful and memorable day. My goal as a onsite professional is to provide with a stress-free atmosphere for the Bride and her party, with absolutely beautiful results.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like most about our city is the closeness of the community! Living in Aurora (Ogden and Eola) near the Naperville border, there is a great diversity with welcoming embrace. We are close to all the great areas and fantastic schools. We’ve established great friendships and I’ve meet so many amazing women and a lot of them are mamas who are entrepreneurs successfully building their small business.
What I like least about our city?… maybe how busy our Costco gets on the 59th and 75th but, it really is convenient to buy in bulk.
