Today we’d like to introduce you to Armani Howard.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Taking inspiration from growing up on the South Side of Chicago in the Roseland area, I took some of the negative circumstances that I encountered/witnessed, and documented them. This documentation led to a novel being a created; a blue print if you must. This novel, creates the groundwork for the visual work, the message, and direction.
Please tell us about your art.
The literary blueprint in which the work is based on touches on various subject matters such as mental health, race struggles, communication, and more. Besides finding solace in creative expression, it also pushed me and allowed me to document my life’s experiences, and reflect on them in a way to let me maneuver through the present. To become a better communicator but also understanding that communication is key point in making life what you want. Through my work, I want to raise the questions, that causes viewers to reflect on themselves to understand that growth can only come from self, that the answers we need to navigate through life in personal happiness only comes from self. Showing the viewer what is possible in this life, if they look inside and ask the right questions.
In regards to what you should know about the work.
The world of my work not only allows you to see the world but become connected and a part of it, to feel, smell, taste it even. That the work can bleed into any media and has pushed me to embrace my multidisciplinary practices.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Personally I feel that if you constantly are progressing efficiently, to not stagnate your craft and become comfortable, you have to always be able uncomfortable as an artist. Being uncomfortable pushes you to grow and nurture your art to reflect that. At the end of the day success is subjective, its mainly just if you set goals for yourself and achieve them.
