Meet Angelica Newton of Stableway Counseling Services in Lake Zurich

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Newton.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am an encourager. That is my purpose, my spiritual gift, and what I hope to be my contribution to the world. I come from a broken story, as many others do. When odds were stacked against me I made a conscious and intentional decision to not succumb to my circumstance, but rather to harness my experiences to help others. After working with a career counselor to match my strengths, passions, and unique abilities to a profession, I began my journey to become a Mental Health Therapist. Today, I am a keeper of stories, heartaches, and the most beautiful hopes. I feel honored when a client lets me know their deepest vulnerabilities. I see that as a privilege, and strive to do everything I can to help my clients thrive and live their lives with hope, purpose and direction.

Has it been a smooth road?
Under my professional belt you will find years of unpaid work, overnight on-call shifts, budget cuts, physical demands of working in residential centers, and many hours of tedious paperwork. Entry level positions, especially at essential non-profit state-run agencies, often involve an incredibly large workload with minimal compensation for a Master’s degree holding licensed therapist. Now that I am a mother of two it is no longer feasible for me to serve in the same way, but I would encourage professionals new to the field to pay it forward and consider beginning with non-profit work. It is what has paved the road to where I am now and the lessons I have learned were invaluable. The field of mental health has come a long way; however, there is still much work left to be done. I have felt the limitations of this field and I have seen too many clients who are not able to access services because of these obstacles. Advocating for clients and mental healthcare is an important undertaking, and each bit of progress brings renewed hope that a bright future is on the horizon.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Stableway Counseling Services – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a co-owner and mental health therapist at Stableway Counseling Services in Lake Zurich, Illinois. I have the incredible opportunity to work alongside two of my closest friends who have been essential on my journey. We work with clients of all ages who come to therapy in pursuit of help for a wide variety of reasons. We specialize in working with children and adolescents, and our clinicians at Stableway have extensive experience working with at-risk youth in crisis situations. The co-owners at Stableway all began their professions working with Screening and Support Services in McHenry County, we worked with individuals and the family unit to develop adequate, predictable, and reliable supports in response to mental health crisis. I believe that our specialties and extensive crisis backgrounds set us apart from other agencies.

I am proud of the fact that we are three young women who put in a ton of effort in to our educations, experiences, and continued learnings to develop a successful private practice!

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
The bottom line is that mental health matters. So much so that I would say the work that a therapist does is absolutely vital to our society – however, it is generally underutilized and underestimated. My hope is that the mental health industry experiences a flood over the next 5-10 years. I would love to see kids coming in for preventative services, couples and families seeking therapy to learn how to communicate more effectively, and individuals understanding that there is a space to work on becoming the best versions of themselves. I see a future where mental health therapy is not looked down on as something you do when you are ‘sick’, but rather encouraged and universally accepted as a way to improve lives.
