Meet Angelica London

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica London.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Well…I got my start in every artistic area, but painting! Growing up, my mother always put me in creative camps and classes for dance, singing, pottery, jewelry making, etc., and my desire to pick up a paintbrush was only passive. Throughout the years, though, I have channeled my previous exposure to various art forms, into my visual art; I am now inspired by all of those things.

Please tell us about your art.
I am a mixed media artist who primarily creates images that highlight the beauty of the Black Diaspora, with a heavy emphasis on Black women and jewelry pieces. I create these pieces with jewels, gems, found objects, paper, wood scraps…. anything that I can repurpose to create texture and depth. Kara Walker is one of my art influences. A lot of my pieces showcase women from a profile view, which is a nod to Kara Walker’s work and interest in silhouettes from her influence of old school cameo jewelry. With my background in jewelry making, I utilize those pieces that I create on the figure to showcase Black women in a regal fashion. What do I hope people take away from my work? I just want to illustrate the beauty of an all too overlooked group of people. Whether you, as the viewer, are Black or not, I want you to leave with a sense of pride and understanding of the power that’s behind that beauty.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
My only advice is your reason you create, is your reason! Don’t let anyone’s “deep” explanation for why they create, cloud up your reasons. For many years, when people would ask me why I created a certain piece, my response was, “Because I thought it was beautiful.” Sometimes it’s just that simple.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I showcase all over the city. If I’m not hosting a sip & paint party somewhere, I’m live painting at someone’s event. I have work at Gallery Guichard on the Southside and look to have more permanent work elsewhere. People can support my work by following me on Instagram (@ColorMeDelta) or visiting my website (www.ALondonArt.com).
