Meet AMI in Washington Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to AMI.

AMI, please share your story with us.
I started playing drums in church when I was 5 which is uncommon for a little girl. I later moved on to piano at 10 and then attended a performing arts school for middle school and high school. I strayed away from playing for church and put most of my focus into learning classical music. Upon graduation from high school, I attended Central State University where I obtained a bachelor’s of music degree with a concentration in piano performance. While in college, I started to get more into production and R&B performances.

Chicago artist, AMI is a singer/songwriter and musician trained in several genres of music including gospel, rhythm & blues and classical. The combination of influence from these genres and her unique vocal styling presents a fresh sonic experience.

Her debut EP “The Revelation” was released in August of 2016. Following the positive reception of her EP, AMI has become a top feature on the Chicago music scene and is known for her captivating & engaging live performances.

Along with her band, AMI has opened up for several artists including Esperanza Spalding, Jon B, Al. B Sure and Malcolm London. Recently, AMI accompanied rising star, Smino on keyboards as he opened up for SZA’s CTRL tour and she is also the keyboardist for Chicago artist, Jamila Woods.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Creativity stems directly from personal experiences and evolvement. I’ve had personal challenges with self-esteem, identity and family issues and these have all fed into my personal creativity.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about AMI – what should we know?
I am AMI. I’m an artist and musician. I play and teach piano professionally and am a performing artist. As an artist, I’m known for high-intensity performances that are drenched in musicality but have strong trap vibes lol. I’m most proud of my dedication to stick with my sound and remain different. I think what sets me apart is the amount of intensity and passion that I have in both teaching and performance.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Consistency.
