Today we’d like to introduce you to Yesenia Baez.
Yesenia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My career and love for beauty started in “2005” when I was still in high school and was seeking a job as a teenager to have extra spending money for the usual hangouts with friends. I walked into a salon just basically asking if they were hiring, the owner kindly asked: “how old are you, and what would you like to do”? My response was “really anything, I can clean and organize well”, as she was a first-time business owner of her own salon she agreed to hire me. I started out of course as the shampoo/clean up girl. And I grew to then receptionist and my interest first came to nails. I went to nail school while I attended high school and worked at the salon part-time. I paid my way through nail school with what I earned at the salon, as of now. I have built a drive for working, have built work trust in my clientele because I was the receptionist and loved the fact that I was making good money while my friends just liked to hang out. I realized then this was going to be my career moving forward. I graduated high school the summer of “2006” and I went straight to focusing myself on building my clientele in the nail department of the salon. It took about 7-8 months debating whether I wanted to attend full cosmetology school and in the end, the satisfaction of making someone feel beautiful and special was all worth it. I worked at that salon for 10 years and was taught the art of color, cutting, waxing, and specialize in wigs (color, cutting, treatments, and some repair). I was fortunate enough to have worked in an environment where wigs was a big service in the salon because we are not taught that in school. I am a visual learner, so following the most iconic artist and now being able to watch their craft is beyond amazing. After 10 years at that salon, I decided to continue my journey and leave to start my own “beauty on the go” services for about 2 years to a lot of my following clients but also was able to build a larger clientele with customers that have been hospitalized after accidents or medical conditions. I also am proud to be able to service a great number of clients that have a handicap disability and are in a wheelchair wherein most salons are not able to accommodate. I have recently opened my own salon/spa offering hair, nails, waxing facials & wig services. I have been open now for about a year and loving every minute of it. The hustle and bustle of the salon and being able to train staff who love their craft as much as I do is beyond amazing.
Has it been a smooth road?
Like every journey, it comes with struggles. There are times where your character is tested by clients. Make sure to take time to yourself to recharge your battery. We end up becoming big parts of ppls lives and take on a lot of their emotional feelings.
Opening your own business can make you second guess if you’re making the right decision. From finances getting tight to all the legal ends of opening a company. Trust me, there is an end and it does get easier, it’s like learning to ride a bike. You will make mistakes, just learn from them and use them as tools for other choices.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Glam By Jessy – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I offer a wide range of services as a provider. I do hair, nails, color, waxing, & wig services. I would have to say, I specialize in nails, and wig services the most.
I am proud of just being able to make people feel safe. I have a judge free zone. I become part of the families, as I have clients with children and I have watched their them grow up to teenagers and young adults. I have been able to watch most of my young ladies get married and have children of their own.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
“Never give up.”
Keep pushing, follow your gut and strive for better. Take care of your clients as they are your family.
Be sincere, passionate & considerate.
This isn’t just a money job, it’s more than that, you can make anyone sit in your chair feel special when their world might be falling apart.
