Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Moody.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Donna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2010, I decided to cut all of my hair off and start my natural hair journey. I really didn’t think much, I just wanted to share my journey with women all over the world. A year or two later, I won a billboard board contest with dark N Lovely and I knew right then, I had something to offer. God continues to open so many doors which allowed me to work with so many multimillion dollar companies, traveling all over the world. Being able to speak to women and young girls, and do what I love was an amazing journey. I had to play catch up with God because so many doors continued opening. I started my journey thinking it was all about hair but it has allowed me to motivate and inspire others to be confident in themselves. After seven years of natural hair blogging, I decided to start my own natural hairline called ABÉDA CURLS. The business is fairly new and just launched in September 2017. I’m very grateful and thankful for what God is doing.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would say that natural hair blogging was smooth. It was nothing being featured on all of the popular pages on social media and videos being viewed over millions of times. The hard part was and is, is separating from Brand Ambassador to CEO. It’s like starting all over from scratch and build something new for the world to see and trust. Sometimes things may be a little slow or inventory never stays stocked due to sells. You just have to push and know that all things work together for your good. My advice to anyone who wants to start a NEW journey is to do everything AFRAID. Don’t worry about every little thing, just do it’s sometimes the hardest part of the journey is starting. Don’t be afraid to go after your dreams.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a Brand Ambassador for CurlKit at the moment which is a monthly subscription service that allows naturals to experience new products. This brand has allowed me to use my voice and encourage women all over the world. I love blogging and vlogging. I am proud of my journey but I’m most proud of my brand, ABÉDA CURLS. It’s my baby. It took a lot of sacrifices and hard work and I’m proud to say that I at least started and I’m enjoying the good as well as the bad because it’s showing me a new journey which is entrepreneurship. Being a Christian with an all natural hair care line that’s vegan-friendly is what sets me apart. I love inspiring women. I don’t mind taking the time to pour into young girls or women. I’m passionate about what I do and it’s not a dread. In fact, it’s all attached to my purpose.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I use iMovie maker to edit my videos right on my phone. There’s nothing like taking work on the road and get the job done. I use Facetune to edit my photos, insize to scale down images to fit into Instagram, video meme to title my videos, Canva to create flyers and posts, and photoshop mix to cut out images and create cool flyers. My favorite book is the Bible. I love reading the word and I love my devotionals.
