Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Romo.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After graduating high school, I attended Cosmetology school. I wanted to choose a career that I knew I would be passionate about. A career where I could wake up and thoroughly enjoy what I do without the feeling of a “job”.
While attending Cosmetology school, I was also an assistant to an array of hair stylists. I had the chance to help and learn from talented stylists among the Chicagoland area. This was an amazing opportunity that I was humbly thankful for as I got to observe their work and learn their client consultations. I took full advantage and attended every class they offered, because the only way to keep growing in this field is to continue educating yourself. The trends are constantly changing- it is never ending; but, that is the beauty of it.
Today, I am proud to say that I work behind the chair and have built my own clientele; nevertheless, I am still growing in this business. I am thankful to be surrounded by women who bring nothing but positive energy and hungry minds to the salon. We are a team or as I like to call, #BossBabes.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always bumps along the road in life; however, you must overcome them to reach your goals. That being said, it has not been a “smooth road”, but I have yet to let this stop me from achieving my aspirations. Personally, a struggle I have faced was finding a balance between the working field and my personal life. This is a customer service industry – I have to find ways to book every client possible while trying not to let it consume my life. Aside from being a hair stylist, I am a mom as well. I have a home with children to take care of and to make sure that I am present in their life. Finding balance is key.
The advice I would share with individuals aspiring to be in this field is learning when it is appropriate to say “no” when it comes to work inferring with your life. Over the years, I have scarified weekend events which involved family gatherings or even time to myself because I did not know when to say “no”. Although you do have to make sacrifices in life, this does not have to be at a constant. I was becoming unhappy but I did not want this to be my lifestyle. If you are not happy, no one else around you will be. This is why it is important to know how to balance your work-life and your personal. Do what you love and do it with a passion, but never let it take over who you are.
Please tell us about @hair_thug_.
As a professional Hair Stylist, my clients refer to me as the “Blow Out Queen”. Although I feel as though I have mastered in the blow out technique, my heart is in the coloring department.
Balayage is the most requested service now and I am proud to say that I have strengthened my skills and technique to perform this coloring style. Nevertheless, no balayage is the same because of the different hair textures. What fascinates and captivates me is the art and science behind it. It is important to learn about the different foil placement and becoming informed of the color wheel and how it can affect people’s hair differently. Hair stylists are truly artists, we always have to be creative and have patience during the process.
When I am not working with a client, I try to post on my social media to not only build clientele but to showcase my work of art. I make sure that my page is attractive and catches the attention of potential clients. It is important to capture the right angles, as you can tell a lot of the work from a picture.
I am most proud of the positive attitude I embody myself in. It is visible and makes such a difference in this field. I always strive to find a way to turn any negative situation into a positive outcome. By doing so, a positive vibe within the salon results in the clients to feel content, which makes my job fulfilling.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
The following books that I have read have kept me with a positive mindset and has motivated my personal life and my career; You are a Badass, The Secret, and The Power of Now. For instance, the book, The Secret, introduced me -to the law of attraction, which is inspirational to me.
My morning ritual consists of listening to motivational videos on YouTube. Thus, this inspires my daily routine.
