Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Burton.
Tracy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Finally, I decided to pursue my dreams of having my own jewelry business. Tired of working crazy hours and not loving my work – I took a leap of faith… my designs on a whim have brought me tremendous joy. I love seeing people’s face, when they find a piece they love or a complementary post just makes my day. The jewelry I design is created from found vintage objects that comprises TRACYBURTON – “tastefully eclectic”®.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely, I have had challenges and patience is not one of my strong suits. However, I remember I am pursuing my dream. I cannot give into my frustrations. My advice is to realize starting a new business is a learning process. It takes hard work, time, creative problem solving and a sense of humor. Network with others, attend industry events, read and do your homework are all ongoing activities need to continually do to grow. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask for help or a question of a family friend, peer or someone who is successful. The worst thing they can say is no. Or, the best result is they support or assist you. People can surprise you in wonderful ways!
what should we know about TRACYBURTON? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My creations are one of a kind. My signature is to make interesting combinations. I collect vintage items from estate sales, flea markets and given items from friends. Then I just create… my work is not trendy, so my client is herself a person who has a fondness for the unique or unusual. I have sold several pieces to celebrities as well as some designers in Milan + Paris.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
The fashion industry is tough and the retail industry is going through a revolution. Funding is difficult to obtain because the risk is perceived as too great. The majority of people don’t understand the industry or even care to understand. One has to stay strong because there are those who see and think differently + can make things happen.
