Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Castromayor.
Leslie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved fashion. I’d pour over my older sister’s copies of Vogue and Cosmo, caught up in the glamour of the editorials. In college, I became obsessed with vintage and thrifting. It became such a huge obsession I eventually went back to school for Fashion and Marketing Management. I met lots of other amazing people that love and take fashion as seriously as I do as well as other creatives and digital artists. In the back of my mind, I knew we all needed a space for us to be celebrated. The artists/creatives/fashion ingenues alike all deserve a platform to be seen. Along with my amazing photography partner (who captures all the amazing photos of our blog), Nora Drew, Never Heard of Her was born.
Has it been a smooth road?
It still isn’t a smooth road! There have been many hurdles and obstacles that have come in mine/and my partner for Never Heard of Her’s way. My advice (which I have to constantly remind myself of too) is to keep going. No matter what that means. If something isn’t working in the favor of you or your business, let it go. If you’ve come to a roadblock, there’s always a way around/through/under/or over it. You have the ability to make it work.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Never Heard of Her story. Tell us more about the business.
Never Heard of Her is a place for creative women, trans people, and femmes alike to come together, and empower each other through art, photography, visual design, & fashion. All featured artists are on the cusp of being the next big thing, art darling, or fashion ingenue. I think what makes Never Heard of Her stand out is the inclusion factor. We’re not here to prove we’re the gatekeepers of fashion and art. We want to work with as many innovative brands and professionals out there. We don’t care if you’ve been in the industry for 20 years or just starting out. We want everyone to sit at the table with us, and we want to celebrate all the perspectives and voices in our blog/zine.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I’m the youngest of two incredibly intelligent and talented older sisters that were always either studying or out being cool. I’m also the first generation born to two hardworking dedicated immigrant parents. Needless to say, I was alone a lot as a kid, and I was quite scrappy and imaginative. If I put my mind to something, I’d figure out ways to learn a skill or make things happen. I didn’t let limitations get in my way!
