Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniella Thompson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been an avid listener of all genres of music, and I get a ton of fulfillment from attending live shows. While I definitely went to a show or two before I moved here from Atlanta in 2013, the accessibility to concerts here in Chicago was new, incredible, and kind of surreal. In addition to the unlimited access to music-related events, the scenery and architecture here played a huge role in my interest in sharing my experiences with my friends and family. That essentially started on Instagram with a video here and there on my personal page (with the name being a combination of a love for the phrase “oh snap” + my nickname “Danni”), and then slowly became a feed of various events around the city. I decided that establishing a secondary public account was long overdue, and with that it evolved into me creating and hosting my website all on my own – Ohsnapdanni Daily. At that time, I was also looking for a positive creative outlet to focus on after the passing of my father in 2016, and teaching myself a new skill was exactly what I needed. The site includes concert footage, artist merchandise, curated playlists, in-depth album reviews, and so much more. Two years later – from what was just a hobby – I’ve been able to bring my friends along with me to events, have exclusive media access to concerts, become a contributing writer for local publications and websites, and even meet some of my musical heroes. The freedom to work for myself without any deadlines is definitely what keeps this fun for me, and I never want to lose that or expect anything from what I do. I just want to share my opinions and experiences and meet new people along the way.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me, getting started was easy – and even gaining interest on social media was fine. People love music, and like seeing it, hearing it, and reading about it from other perspectives around the world. The hard thing is that music changes so fast, new material is released at warp-speed, and if I don’t get to work right away I feel like what I have to say is irrelevant or “expired”. That could honestly be in my own head, and that’s one of my biggest struggles. I have to remember that I have the support of my friends, and that we all started somewhere. Females don’t give themselves (or each other) enough credit for our accomplishments – all while simply maneuvering through life a a young woman. I think it’s also important to try create a lane for yourself even if your role doesn’t “exist”. Setting an example for other women to see that it’s possible to just do your own thing from scratch is something that is also dear to me.
What should we know about Ohsnapdanni Daily Music Blog? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
So, to pinpoint my specialty would be: comprehensive music reviews, concert media and footage, and pop culture.
I think what sets me apart from others is that my views are my own, and those of no one else. One of my favorite comments on a post was that my perspective was “normal” but my composition was “clean”, which is exactly what I want to exude. I never wanted to have extreme high-def photos, or full-length videos of concerts, or even really show too much of myself online. I wanted my media posts to be through my eyes, with just a taste of what you could experience if you took the opportunity to venture out to concerts. So, I could say I specialize in live media whether it be videos or photos. I am proud of the fact that so many people share my love for so many different types of artists, and that music has landed my the opportunity to expand that reach even further through local outlets. I never imagined that a publication would reach me directly to write for them, and that I have tangible magazines with my articles in them. That’s crazy, right?
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Don’t compare yourself or your accomplishments to others’, push yourself out of your comfort zone, and always trust your gut.
