Check out Yusra Ali’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yusra Ali.

Yusra, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I could never answer the question “what’s your hobby?” as I had many, but nothing that was truly a part of me. I was always too busy to dedicate time to finding one, or at least I thought I was. On a very special day, I was attending my best friend’s engagement party, being the reserved person that I am, I offered to take pictures for her. I would rather be busy helping out in any way I could than to have small talk with people I barely know. When I started to see everyone’s smiles, it was bliss. Being behind that lens was the best feeling.

I graduated with a bachelor’s degree at the age of 20, I taught prekindergarten and subbed for my district for a good amount of time and gave it up to raise my kids. I am a mother of two amazing young boys. After I had my first son, I started learning more about photography and pursued my hobby. Who would have thought when your schedule was over packed you would find time for extra work?

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Life goes by so fast that sometimes we forget to take a step back and look at what we accomplished or the blessed life we live. I am a photographer that loves to capture people’s milestones and happiness. Its beyond exciting seeing people’s pure joy during events, makes you appreciate life more. My goal is to capture moments that happen in that split second, as those moments don’t happen very often, so that one day they look at their picture and remember good times as “a picture is worth a thousand words.”

Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?

I truly believe life has become easier for artists in recent years as social media has been playing a huge role. Its giving people a chance to get out there more and have the courage to show their work to the world.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My work can be viewed on my Instagram account “highkey_ph” as well as on overdressedchicago.com.
