Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Schuller.
Deanna, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always been a creative individual. As a kid growing up in a very small town in Central Illinois, I tried every creative outlet I could find, but I learned sketching and drawing from my artistic Mom. Her sketches inspired me to do the same, which lead to me taking art classes in high school, and then later in college where I graduated in Graphic Design. Through all these artistic and creative stages and steps, I learned so much about composition, color and more! I was hooked on all things creative… including photography. But it wasn’t until my own son started playing football that I truly started using my camera in a professional capacity. Sports photography for our local high school led to senior photo sessions for friends, then prom photos, family sessions, and on and on! Now, with 10+ years as a professional photographer and freelance graphic designer on my resume, I feel I have truly come into my own style and my skill set continually evolves.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a photographer and freelance graphic designer with a love of all things happy and organic! I find great joy in capturing honest moments between people, families, and in individuals. It touches my heart in such a deep and profound way when I can look at my camera and see that I “got it”… that moment, that look, that emotion that a lot of people miss or overlook in their busy, daily lives. I make all of that stand still with a picture, like I’m telling that person to just relax, breathe, and look at how truly beautiful and amazing they really are.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
Recently, I have been approached by a few brand-new photographers asking for advice, tips and more. It’s quite the compliment! I feel the best advice I can give them is to trust your creative eye. Take some classes, whether at the local college or online. There are so many great resources out there these days! Shadow an established photographer. They are often looking for a second shooter. And get out there and shoot, shoot, shoot! It’s the best way to get comfortable with your gear and your inner eye.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
