Today we’d like to introduce you to Bri Vega.
Bri, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am a wife, mom and nanny with a love for photography who flourished my passion into a career. Photography is my escape and my chance to create something for me and for my clients! I’ve always been fascinated with the innocence of children and their sense of imagination, something that adults seem to forget as the years pile on. Growing up I was a big sister and often times felt like a mini mom which is why nannying was just a natural choice for me as one of my first’s jobs. Although I loved nannying, the pressure of society to be able to choose a career that would grant me some type of grand importance haunted me. I went to college for many things since graduating high school and although I now have the knowledge of a customer service drive thru employee, the ability to appreciate the hard work of warehouse workers, the chance to know the different procedure and tools that a dental assistant needs, learned the ropes of real estate investing and studied forex charts long into the night to turn a profit. But nothing gives me as much joy as hearing my shutter click as I capture beautiful moments for my clients and their children. That’s how I knew that combining my love for children and photography would be what I was meant to do from the start. As cliché as it sounds, nothing matters more than what makes your soul happy. It still baffles me that straight out of high school we are expected to pick a career and dig ourselves into monstrous amounts of debt in the hopes of amounting to anything remotely successful. Once I realized that success is objective and unique, is when I decided to lean into this adventure headfirst and headstrong as I always do. Sometimes my husband wishes I picked a less expensive hobby but I’m so thankful that he believes in me more than I believe in myself and he has helped me turn my hobby into a career. With my clients, I am not building a photography business, I am creating timeless heirloom keepsakes that will withstand the test of time and serve as pieces of history for family’s to look back on and pass down through generations.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I hope my clients are able to look at my artwork and remember the good there is in life. Too many times we get caught up in the negativity in the world and fail to realize the perfect little pockets of time that we would otherwise forget and miss. Like the eyelashes and tiny toes of their newborn baby, fresh and full of potential. Or the way they look at each other full of love in their engagement photos. I want my photos to be an example of hope, light and love.
Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
I think life can be difficult for artists especially trying to find a balance in between creativity, family and responsibilities. We are always our worst critics and are either trying to one up ourselves or the competition but I am a big believer in community over competition. There’s room for everyone to express their art in a different way and have a reach and impact over larger communities. Showcasing new artists as well as more “experienced” artists helps propel everyone further. And other artists, reach out to those that you admire, strike up conversations, don’t be fearful of letting others too close in the chance that they will be become your competition. Creativity grows well in groups.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Follow me on social media or visit my website at www.brivega.com. I’m not so great at blogging but I will be blogging more of my sessions as well.
