Check out Amy O. Woodbury’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy O. Woodbury.

Amy O., we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.

I’ll start at the very beginning. I was born in the farm country of Mendota, Illinois, and raised in suburban LaGrange, Illinois. I graduated with a degree in Modern Dance from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. After college, I moved back to Chicago where I immersed myself in the contemporary dance scene for nearly a quarter of a century. In retrospect, I view this first career as a wonderful base for making visual art; movement, line, musicality, texture, spatial awareness – it has all translated seamlessly for me. I have been making visual artist since 1998.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Working primarily in mixed media, I paint a variety of things: figures in dense, detritus-laden landscapes, abstract expanses of water or land, portraits of imaginary women. And not all on stretched canvas: I have utilized old tabletops, a wooden shoe, drop cloths, a bat house, a legal pad, the list goes on. Making art is very personal for me, and so I don’t really have a message to convey. I like to think I lay the groundwork for people to discover and refine their own message, construct their own narrative.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
Fecund, rich, layered, immense. In towns large and small., things are shifting, burgeoning at such a rate, with myriad opportunities, events, exhibitions and collectors – it’s enough to make one’s head spin.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
