Art & Life with Valerie Lorimer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Lorimer.

Valerie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m a self-taught illustrator/artist with degrees in music (it’s all creative!), and I worked as a professional accompanist in Chicago for many years before moving to graphic design, illustration, and fine art full time. I’ve had a passion for art from a young age – when I was 8 I received my first set of pastels from family friends. One of my favorite gifts ever! I work full time as a graphic designer and continue creating my art business “at night.” I love all things creative, still playing piano and composing as well. I create artwork using ink, illustrator markers, acrylic, pan pastel, alcohol inks, and digital media. I have licensed designs with several US companies. I’ve won numerous awards and have pieces in the Naperville Marriott.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I basically work on various types of artist’s paper using a variety of media including inks, acrylic, illustrator marker, and pan pastel. My process is intuitive, and I find it’s always interesting to see how a piece changes along the way.

I’m inspired by many different things including nature, architecture, music and books (I’m an avid reader!). I hope that people view my art and walk away feeling uplifted.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
Success to me isn’t all about sales (although it’s nice). The interaction that people have with my work is the most rewarding. I’ve had people connect with pieces in ways that I never thought about. It’s gratifying to have that effect on someone’s day. I think having a positive mindset is essential for an artist – it keeps you open to what’s out there in the universe both creatively and for artistic growth.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I always have new work in the monthly exhibits at the DuPage Art League in Wheaton and Naperville Art League in Naperville. I also have a website: http://www.valerielorimer.com where you can see my work and also shop. Of course, I have an Instagram page (vlorimerart) and Facebook page (Valerie Lorimer Contemporary Arts). If you see something you like in either of these pages, you can always message me.
