Today we’d like to introduce you to Karina Mora and Michael Metts.
Karina and Michael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My husband Michael started a photography business sort of by accident. He was always drawn to photography, by the age of 15 he had saved up and purchased his own camera. In his hometown of Michigan, several people noticed his photojournalism work and started asking him to do headshots, family photos, senior photos, and even weddings.
When we met in college, he helped me transition from film photography and working in a dark room to digital photography and learning the computer software to process our photos. I started shadowing him on shoots, and being his lighting assistant, as well as experimenting with photography on my own family and friends.
We were married in 2009, and decided to move to Chicago to really dive into the photography business. I helped transplant his business and within a few years we were fully a Chicago-based company.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No definitely not. As you could guess working with your husband isn’t always the smoothest road. We’ve had to make our way through branding disagreements, website design changes, marketing decision, and scheduling conflicts.
At the end of the day we always come back to the reason we started our business and make serving our clients the priority. We want our marriage to be an example for others in business, as well as our couples as they start their lives together.
Metts Photo – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are wedding photographers in Chicago. Our approach to photography is to capture the moments that matter the most to our couples in a genuine and creative way. We believe it’s important not just to take pictures of the main events and the details but to also capture the emotions and interactions that make up a wedding story.
We are most proud that we pour ourselves into our clients. From our first interaction to beyond their wedding day, we make sure we get to know them and their personalities to best serve and guide them through the wedding process.
We are one of the few photography companies in Chicago that offer full day wedding coverage. We truly want to capture the whole wedding day story, so we’re available from start to finish. Because of this, our booking space is limited and we don’t book more than one wedding per weekend.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I feel like I’ve succeeded in our business every time I get a positive e-mail back from a client after I deliver the images from their wedding. I feel like we’ve succeeded as a company when our couples feel like taken care of and appreciated.
I also feel like I’ve succeeded when I’ve taken the time to strategically plan ahead to make time for friends and family, and to recharge my mind.
