Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Hatcher.
Beth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Beth Interactive right before my husband and I moved to Germany in 2010. I was directing digital marketing for a north suburban hospital and was lucky enough to turn that job into a vendor relationship. During our three years in Germany, we expanded our business (while seven time zones away!) from healthcare marketing to copywriting, website design and analytics, hiring several staff in the US.
Once we moved back to Chicago in 2013, things really picked up. Now, we operate as a virtual digital agency as a dynamic 5-person team with a fleet of freelancers. We’ve expanded our capabilities to include e-fundraising, email marketing, SEO, large-scale project direction and a few other goodies—plus grown in new industries like non-profits, law firms, education and marketing consulting.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been mostly a smooth road. Navigating client relationships/workload and managing a team while 7 hours ahead in Europe was no picnic—but it worked surprisingly well!
Like any small business, our struggles have included the ups and downs of project work. When we’re busy, we’re *busy*—but I always get nervous when big projects have concluded, and we’re looking for our next opportunities. I’ve tried to balance the panic of those low-business times by expanding capabilities, pursuing partnerships and growing into other industries. So far, it’s worked really well.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Beth Interactive story. Tell us more about the business.
Beth Interactive is a digital marketing agency based in Chicago that specializes in online strategy and consultation, e-fundraising, email marketing, web analytics, search engine optimization, website writing/design/management and more. We have more than 12 years’ experience working with non-profits, fundraising organizations, small- to medium-sized businesses, hospitals and healthcare organizations, legal and physician practices.
We pride ourselves on partnering closely with clients to integrate their consumer experience, brand consistency and overall marketing strategy with every project—using analytics and conversions to measure meaningful ROI and actionable improvements.
Our strengths include large-scale project direction and execution, dynamic leadership, exceptional project management, targeted copywriting, meticulous attention to detail and clear communication.
We’re also in a unique niche of providing e-fundraising, email marketing and SEO/analytics—there aren’t too many other firms out there who combine those skills and do it as well as we do.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not sure if I’d call it luck, but there is definitely something in the universe that works in magical ways for us.
Just as opportunities are expanding, I meet the right people for the job. As we’ve made strong connections with new clients, those have led to other partnerships—both for us and our clients. The day after one employee found out an adoption was going through (within the next week!), I met someone who could expand our services in her absence.
I like to think that the excellent work we put out into the world—and how much we love building relationships with our clients and partners—comes back to us many, many times over.
And I have been immensely lucky to have found a team who I am privileged to count as colleagues and close friends. (And my mom: she is our business manager and does a damn good job!)
