Today we’d like to introduce you to Celena San Juan.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Funny thing is I originally went to school for finance in Alexandria, VA. Fast forward 10 years and I’m in the beauty industry in Chicago w/a two year old. Life is crazy and I’m just riding the wave.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a hair and makeup artist. I make and create by collaborating and translating my idea of beauty onto my clients
Why? I’ve tried being behind a desk. I’m a creative. I’m come to terms with that. Everyone has their own insecurities right? I find that playing my part as an artist is the least I can do in today’s society. Sounds cliché but if I boost a stranger’s self-esteem for even 5 seconds, I’m living.
The bottom line for me is showing and proving. I used to work in an office y’all. Monday-Friday, 9-5. I didn’t like it so I started swimming against the current and working towards what I wanted. What I would want anyone to take away from this, is that as long as you work toward what you want, you can have what you want. Anything is possible.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Social media is awesome for this. There are literally support groups for anything and everything these days. You could also search for anyone and message them through their preferred contact. That works too.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
If you’re free definitely come check out “Opposites if Adam” this coming Friday, August 31st starting at 7PM at Bridgeport Art Center. It’s a really cool concept exhibit by Taylor Larue that I had the opportunity to do makeup/some hair for.
Otherwise I am frequently updating my website: www.celenasanjuan.com and posting daily behind the scenes footage of some of my awesome of clients on set, on location or in my makeup chair – on my Instagram stories @celenagram.
