Life and Work with Suzie Carroll

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzie Carroll.

Suzie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had a deep passion to help and treat people, which is why I originally entered into the nursing profession. After spending several years treating patients in the hospital, I wanted to gain more autonomy over my patients care, so I went back to school at Loyola University Chicago (Go Ramblers!) and became a Family Nurse Practitioner.

I was always interested in aesthetic medicine because it ignites positivity and artistry. The field allows me to be creative, while also using my clinical judgment. I love making my patients feel beautiful and doing whatever I can to help them boost their confidence and achieve their goals.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Cosmetic and aesthetic medicine is a highly competitive field and it can be difficult to get your foot in the door. I, too, had my share of rejection during the job search. It can be exhausting and at times, I was hopeless. However, I would say the biggest disappointment during job search was getting offered a position, but quickly finding out they would be underpaying me BIG TIME. I even considered it! I thought, “Is this what I need to do in order to get into this field?!?” Needless to say, I declined the offer and kept looking.

My advice? Know your worth, and don’t stop until you find someone that recognizes it. Stay tenacious and stay true to yourself.

Please tell us about SpaDerma.
I inject! At SpaDerma we carry Botox and Dysport, which are neurotoxins that help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. We also carry Juvederm and Restyalne facial fillers, which are used to plump lips or create structure in areas of your face that have started to lose the battle against gravity. I listen to my client’s desires and together, we come up with an anti-aging plan. Often, this includes additional services like microneedling or hydrfacials (get one – life changer) or starting a Retinol which helps treat hyperpigmentation and discoloration. What many people don’t realize is that injectables are a skin care service, so I like to not only treat the client’s individual concern but also help antiaging treatments that they can do to enhance their skin globally.

Something that I pride myself on is that I aim to be conservative with my Botox and filler treatments. I’ve found that a lot of my clients would much rather raise their eyebrows than be completely frozen (novel idea, huh?) Listen, girls, I am never afraid to turn away a sale if it isn’t in your best interest.

I am so fortunate to have clients across the lifespan (ages 20-80!), who allow me to inject their faces. Often times during my appointments, I feel like I am helping a friend get ready for her first date, or helping her look her best before she inevitably runs into her ex at an upcoming wedding. We chat about their lives – boyfriends, best friends, weddings, divorces, and even the most recent Bravo-lebrity gossip. It has been so rewarding to see the wrinkles fade away over time, while also seeing a boost in their self-esteem.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
SpaDerma has been great to bring in some expert injectors to help train and coach us all the latest techniques and tricks. I am so grateful that I can lean on these teachers when I have questions on tricky client concerns or even just navigating through the industry. I am also surrounded by some fabulous injectors at SpaDerma, and I constantly use them as a resource as well. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Lean on and learn from those around you, create a supportive circle of like-minded women, and always be willing to help out in return. You won’t regret it!
