Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivy Ippolito-Foreman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my business by simply just shopping for myself. People would always ask me where’d you get your shoes, your sunglasses, your accessories or bags. I would tell them and they’d say next time you’re there grab me this or that. I was a sales rep for a publishing company at the time and would travel to NY for business and find lots of cool things there so I was always bringing things back, to the point I was shipping boxes of items. My house was full of girls in & out shopping my finds, so I started doing trunk shows, then an online business which grew into a brick and mortar boutique. I left my successful job of over 10 yrs. and rolled the dice on a store. 13 years later I’m still here going strong. We now have incorporated bridal/bachelorette into the store as well since my mom, Judy Ippolito, helps me, as she’s a florist & party/event planner. She sees brides here and we also host bachelorette parties/bday parties/divorce parties, or just girl’s night out events in our party room. The backroom is fun & sexy, the decor is pink/black/gold with zebra carpet, chandelier and maribou feather lighting, there’s always good music playing with a cool, chill vibe. The store is also situated in the heart of Forest Parks downtown area so there’s tons to do after you stop at our shop.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course it’s been up and down so you have to do a lot of things i.e. a website sale, outside events/parties etc. But social media helps a TON! We ship almost daily based on things we post.
Girlicious Boutique – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The atmosphere is like no other. It’s very bright, and stimulating, everything’s shiny and very girly and we’re always ready for EVERY holiday! We change the store almost weekly, and I also shop new merchandise weekly so it’s always changing. Since my mom is a party planner and designer she has a great eye and changes our displays about every 2 weeks. We custom make things, personal shop for people all the time and are known for our customer service. My customers have all become my friends. They tell me their life story, I’ve seen their kids grow up, I listen and give them attention because I care. Girlicious is an experience. Everyone has a choice and can shop at big chains but they don’t get good customer service or, a drink/a coffee/a snack; whatever I have, I offer, I often even buy lunch. I also have a TV for kids and a candy jar for them so the moms can relax and shop!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Customer service, again. I respond quickly no matter how busy I am. I remember everyone’s wants; I keep a list and even if it takes me 4 mos., I will find what they’re looking for but usually it’s the same week! I also truly care about people as I said. I donate to everyone’s charities (and never brag/post about what I do for others), I try and be good to people because without them I wouldn’t be here. I work hard. I’ve never called into work because I can’t! I’m NEVER late or leave early. Even if no one walks in, I’m dedicated until 6pm. If someone calls and asks me to stay late for them, I do. I accommodate people as much as I can.
