Meet Andrea Harney of Andrea Harney Marketing & Photography in Lincoln Square

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Harney.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Andrea. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It a bit of a winding story. I moved to Chicago in 2002 with $1000 in my pocket, an unfinished degree, a sub-lease, and no job. The things we are brave (or foolish) enough to do when we’re young! Anyway, I started temping as an admin, which soon turned into a full time marketing job. So I worked in corporate marketing for about 15 years and finished my degree at the along the way.

I also rediscovered my love of photography during that time. I always took photos when I was young but never took formal classes until about 8 years ago. Then, in 2013 I started taking small side photography jobs – headshots, product, website images – and really loved working with the business owners.

Burning out on the corporate life I decided I wanted to start my own business. It’s taken a couple twists and turns but I’ve finally ended up here and am excited to work with other businesses to help tell their brand stories with photography. So I get to use all the knowledge of my marketing days but work in a medium that I love – photography.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all! It took a while to really nail down the concept, I got lured back to corporate for a short spell, and I’ve had to take a big leap out of my introverted comfort zone to get out there and tell people about me and what I do. And while it hasn’t been a smooth road it’s interesting, and I’m excited to see where it goes.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a brand photographer. Most people ask, what does that mean? Well, I work with entrepreneurs and business owners to tell their brand stories with authentic images. More and more, businesses need quality photography to stand out and connect with their ideal clients. Most businesses are found online whether through their website or social media and if there aren’t good images people will move on to the next.

I love working with clients to understand their business, brand and goals so we capture images that tell their stories, and connect with people on a more personal level. I also offer headshots and product photography, so I can help businesses with all their photography needs.

I think there are two things that set me apart from others. One, I have a background in marketing, so I understand branding, communications, etc. and I can really collaborate with my clients and help draw out the brand stories that will resonate with their audience. And two, I offer a subscription photography service so my clients can have fresh images every quarter instead of struggling to take or find fresh images at the last minute. They’ll have a whole collection of images at their fingertips!
