Today we’d like to introduce you to Rajeeyah Mujahid.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Rajeeyah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 1983 I met a Muslim brother by the name of Attiyyah Bilal Bismillah here in Charleston at a seafood restaurant downtown.
And we started talking and he invited me to an event. He didn’t explain to me at the time what is was about but I went anyway.
It was on a Saturday night at the Francis Marion Hotel in downtown Charleston. I went in there sat in my seat looking all around and the place was packed to its capacity. Then all of a sudden a loud boom noise rippled through the auditorium. My eyes grew big as a saucer and my heart started pounding. I didn’t know what was happening! Then music to my ears was something I have never heard before. After that men and women were singing in a language I have never heard before. Next they were moving to the rhythm I have never seen before. I was to dancing to James Born and Michael Jackson. I was memorized! I was paralyzed to what was going on at that time. I clapped my hands of that after every dance and drumming the Charleston African Drum and Dance Ensemble performed. I knew right then that I wanted to be a part of this amazing opportunity. This event was the beginning of RBM School of the Arts. I have been teaching African Drum and Dance for 35 years. I have taught mainly Children and some adults. RBM School of the Arts is colorful. We express Education through the Arts. We offer Piano keyboard, Art, Poetry and Drama. These entities are being excluded from the public schools across America. Children need to be creative and expressive. I’m a Head Start Teacher and I see the joy on the children’s faces whenever they are allowed to be free to experience freedom of expression in and outside the classroom. I love what I do. RBM African Drum and Dance company was founded by my ex-husband Jamal Raid Mujahid of Chicago Illinois and myself along with my 3 Children, Hasan, Hanifah, and Hakim. Family members, Brandy Moore-Scott, Oswald Moore, Tyrrie Moore, and neighbor’s Aginah and Khaleehah El Amin in 1989. Later on February 10, 2018 the name was changed to RBM School of the Arts where Talents are enhanced.” I am the Founder and Owner of Sista Soljah Entertainment. Under this umbrella we have, Stop the Violence Backyard Fundraising Event, the Nigerian Connection, and the RBM School of the Arts Nubian Prince and Princess Purple Tea/Ball. All of these entities are to promote Unity in the community for the young at heart. I’m on a mission to help humanity. Through the Arts. I am a believer in Allah and a teacher at heart. We are one human race that comes in different shades of colors. We need to turn back to the Lord and truly love each other.
Has it been a smooth road?
One of the biggest struggle is consistency. Some people take what I do for granted. They don’t seemed to understand the importance of learning about your culture through the Arts. Teach one and pass it on. We as a people have been deprived of our past for so long and now here comes one who is giving it to you Free! And you are not consistent about learning about self through the Arts.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the RBM School of the Arts story. Tell us more about the business.
RBM School of the Arts has been in existence since 1989. We specialized in expressing Education through the Arts. We are known for bright beautiful colors and African drum and Dance, and Stop the Violence.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see RBM School of the Arts going places because we have a message to the world. And that is, “If we don’t allow our children to express themselves in a positive way. They will express it in a negative way.” RBM School of the Arts will be partners with Sista Soljah American School of Nigeria in the next 5 years. The trend will be, we are taking it to the streets.
Stop the Violence through the Arts.
