Meet Justin Teilhet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Teilhet.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My mother was a painter, growing up I was surrounded by art. I began working in clay at a young age. Ceramics followed me through school and my short career as a graphic designer, finally materializing full-time in the small garage studio. Years later I moved my family to the country where I built the studio I’ve worked in for over 20 years. In that time I have followed many different bodies of work and various techniques. I have found myself many times scrapping everything to explore something new.

Please tell us about your art.
The common thread through all of my work has been fired clay. When I began working in my studio I explored primitive bodies of work conducive to the simple tools I had. Eventually I found my way to English porcelain which I fire in a large gas reduction kiln. This work started out primarily as contemporary vessels and has stretched into sculptural objects and wall installations.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Sacrificing for things you feel passionate about is one of life’s most bitter sweet challenges. There have been hard times and good times, and then more hard times. But I wouldn’t change it for anything. Staying true to your creative vision and championing work you feel strongly about it is critical.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
A large part of what I do is getting my work out there. Over the years I have been represented by a variety of entities and done much of my own self representation. I’ve been exhibited at SOFA Chicago several times, and even shown my own work at venues such as the old town art fair in Chicago. I work with a variety of designers who I have primarily met at the Architectural Digest Design Show in New York. I do have a website but these days you can find the most interesting view of current work on Instagram @jteilhet.
