Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Head.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Austin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started in fitness after high school. I gained around 15 lbs. of fat and didn’t feel good about myself. So, I started going to group classes in Kilgore, TX on a regular basis. The instructor, Alvan Duckworth, eventually took me under his wing, and we started to workout together. This is where my love for fitness began.
For about 2 years, I was debating on moving to Chicago, and with the support of my mom, grandmother and a close family friend, Ronnie Spradlin, I decided to move to the big city from Kilgore, TX!
Soon after the move, I began working at “The Best Gym in Chicago” Fitness Formula Clubs. Within 3 months I became a top trainer at the gym. I loved changing peoples lives through personal training, but I knew I wanted to do it on a bigger scale. I started taking THE Antonio Coke’s group x classes and was hooked. With the help of Antonio, I started just subbing classes.
Eventually, I would get MY OWN group x class. I remember the feeling of such happiness while I was teaching & I knew it was my calling.
I asked our Senior Director of Fitness, Jon Baraglia, & our Regional Group Fitness Director, Lois Miller, that I wanted to go “Full Time Group X”. & they supported the idea.
Currently, I am 1 of 3 exclusive group instructors in the company of FFC, teaching almost 30 classes a week. I am also the creator of the “TRT bootcamp” at FFC Union Station. (“T.R.T” Tread. Rowing. Turf). We are now the most successful bootcamp in the company and we are continuing to grow.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has differently not been a smooth road. Starting out in group fitness I’ve always held myself to a high standard and want every class to be “perfect”. Now, I know there can never be a perfect class but I wanted it as close to perfect as possible. The group fitness industry has a grind to it. Having stayed up late to program the next day of classes, with the first classes starting at 6 am and the last class ending at 7:30 pm, the days are long but so worth it.
Austin Head- Group Instructor/Personal Trainer – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a Personal Trainer and Group X Instructor. I am known for my spin, total body classes & now my TRT boot camps.
I am most proud of the experience that I create in a class. I feel people come to Group classes for so many different reasons, but the main reason is stress relieve and to get a great workout in. I provide both. I like to think of my classes as a PARTY! The beats, the atmosphere the people, it all goes to create an amazing experience.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
That’s a complicated one. My main thing is that I want to change as many lives as I possibly can. I want to be known as THE BEST group instructor in the city of Chicago. Thats my goal. I know that sounds extreme and far-fetched, but when I become know as that, then I will be content and feel that I am successful.
