Life and Work with Laura Boton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Boton.

Laura, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Sine Qua Non Salons started in 1993. I wanted to create a flexible positive work environment for Chicago hairdressers, where freedom flexibility and creativity were the values. We are celebrating 25 years on August 18!

We have 3 locations, 55 employees, and very long relationships with our team.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to my success was paved with my conscious intention of making my team happy, As long as I stayed true to that value, we did very well. My advice would be to come from an authentic place that reflects what new entrepreneur values are in relation to the business you are starting. If you stay true and don’t let greed or ego lead you, you should attract business, it has worked for us!

Please tell us about Sine Qua Non Salons, Chicago.
What set us apart is our focus on work-life balance. My mission is to make sure my staff is happy. If they are happy then I know they will make our clients happy. We do live in, easy to wear hair for Chicago’s creative community. We are completely committed to education and growth. These values set us apart from the norm.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
The best mentors I have found by accident. The great Howard Mclaren, I met at Bumble, and he was very kind and generous, helping us learn how to do photo shoots and what values are important for long-term success.

I have never been a great networker, but I also love Daniel Kaner from Oribe. He has to share a lot of valuable knowledge, simply because he deeply cares about the salon industry. I met all of them both people through the products they created, and my desire to be the best at what we do.
