Today we’d like to introduce you to Darryl DeAngelo Terrell.
Darryl DeAngelo, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m a Detroit Native, move to Chicago, for graduate school where I studied photography at SAIC, during my time there I found a better understanding of self, through my practice, I start to photographically explore the intersections of blackness, from sexuality to family structure, as well as personal stories, displacement, gentrification etc. I’m also extremely interested in making artwork accessible to disenfranchised people, via a Digital Museum I founded in 2017 MOCA.IG (Museum of Contemporary Art of Instagram.) I am currently an Artist in residence at Chicago Artist Coalition, and a 2018 Lumin Art Visual Art Fellow.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a interdiaplonary artist with the primare focus in Lens Based Media. My art practice is driven by the things I consider to be my addictions i.e social media, music, pop culture, narratives and black people. I use these topics as entry points in my work, to explore what it is to be black in America. I have started to think about the Black, femme, and queer body as one and separate entities, and how they occupy and demand space in the American landscape.
I make work that encourages conversation while challenging the viewers. Work that makes niggas feel apart and included. Work that induces emotion and reaction. I want to make you think about your views when you see my work.
How can artists connect with other artists?
On Friday get out of your studio and go to exhibitions, meet people, you don’t just get show by make art, you have to make connections too!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
By following me on my IG at BLK boy shine, look out for exhibitions I have coming up this year, art Chicago Artist Coalition, Roots and Culture, etc. but also, via my website www.darryldterrell.com.
