Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Komarov.
Anna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I came to the USA 6 years ago from Poland and didn’t know that I want to become a photographer. I was shooting a little with my small point and shoot camera but it was nothing serious. Then, accidentally I met few artistic souls here in Chicago and later started working as an assistant for one Polish fashion photographer. When I was assisting, I learned how to set up the light or pose a model but I also saw how hard that job was! Later, I bought my own camera and started learning how to shoot from YouTube. With each day I was understanding how light works and my camera settings more and more. I started taking my own photos and soon enough decided to go on my own and follow my own path.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My journey to become fashion photographer wasn’t easy. In the beginning, I was shooting fairytale stories using a lot of surrealistic elements and later, adding magic in photoshop. At some point, my imagination just stopped. I hit a creative block and couldn’t make those pictures any more. I remember one day, in January 2016, when I was talking with my husband and complaining that I am not creating anymore to which he replied: “Start shooting fashion you still can be a creative plus, you always loved fashion!” After that, I just started doing it – every week, I set up a few shots, I paid for makeup, stylist, and studio time. During the week I had an office job but my whole weekend was dedicated to photography.
Now, I’m shooting with every agency in Chicago – I have contacts with agencies in LA, NY and some agencies in Europe as well. It has been only two years, very long, productive and creative two years.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Anna Komarov story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m a fashion photographer. I love romantic editorials and I love to tell a story through my pictures.
I’m inspired by many photographers from around the world mostly from Europe and you can see in my style. My pictures are different in the Chicago market.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I strongly believe that there is no bad or good luck. There is only hard work and that hard work will take you on a journey where you will meet people like yourself. Hardworking, passionate, dedicated to the job people.
