Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Montelongo.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Electronics has always been an interest of mine. Installing security cameras began as a leisure activity. Sure, there is theft and crime in Chicago but I more or less installed a security camera in my house because it was fun. I just like to see what I can do or fix with electronic devices.
Before opening my business, I was a base technician working with 911 centers; telephone, radio, and video security systems. I liked my work, but I found myself enjoying the customer service aspect and wanting a schedule I could set for myself.
I think beginning a business is very daunting for anyone who attempts it. It was both exciting and intimidating; knowing I had a practical service I could provide but also somewhat concerned about how I would get my name out there and line up my first customers. But much to my surprise, the phone started ringing and before I knew it I found myself needing more hands to help finish the work faster. Ironically, I’m working harder than I ever had to before, but the connections I build and the service I provide is well worth all the chances I took to bring this company to life.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a technician is only one aspect of the job while there are many responsibilities that go into being the owner of a company. From financials, to insurance, to taking inventory of supplies, taxes, maintenance contracts, there were a lot of key factors I had to learn and I still don’t know it all. But that’s one of the worthwhile parts of beginning your own business.
I’d say my biggest challenge was finding reliable people who I could train appropriately and at the same time, trust. It’s really important to me that I leave behind a solid product and hire people who can offer the kind of service I stand behind.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Cam9install story. Tell us more about the business.
What sets us apart is our ongoing commitment to the product we’ve installed. Not only do we set up the equipment, we also remain available in case there are any functionality issues that may arise afterward. I try to always follow up with my clients to make sure they are satisfied with our work.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Currently there is a big boom for surveillance in Chicago because the cameras are getting cheaper and the video quality is much better than it has been in past. Camera systems will to stick around because the need is always present. Soon everyone will have a video surveillance system and at some point, it will just be a matter of maintaining high quality operating video systems.
