Today we’d like to introduce you to Roy Grant.
Roy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
One of the main things that opened me to my calling was reading self-help books as a teenager. I was thrilled that I could change my life with my own two hands as the books described, dealing at the time with childhood trauma, PTSD, and depression. I dove into the world of self-work, meditation, positive visualization, and culminating positive energy in my life – and seeing for myself the power of these tools, I knew this was what I was going to dedicate my life to and how I would help others as I longed to, finding that my early exposure to pain ironically qualified me to be a healer. At 19, I started instructing my own meditation course, and from there lead various workshops on self-esteem and how to attract what we want in our lives. I also became a registered nurse, certified life coach, and Reiki practitioner, fascinated with all levels of healing. But it wasn’t until I began writing my own self-help books that I truly felt I had found my purpose.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I mentioned, I am no stranger to pain, having been the victim of sexual abuse and severe bullying as a child, having dealt with deep depression, and being hypersensitive overall which causes me to experience extreme highs and extreme lows. However, this is what gives me my unique strengths, what has pushed me to grow, and what allows me to connect with others on a real, deeper, emotional level, and what has strengthened my personal understanding of and relationship with God.
In my book, “Paradise is Now,” I address the power of pain, explaining how our traumatic experiences deepen our capacity for empathy, cause us to evolve emotionally, and in this way are actually helping to expand the paradise we live in, slowly but surely. This I firmly believe, and it is this that has given me meaning to life and an unshakable belief in a higher good that keeps me going.
As an entrepreneur, it has also been difficult to have no one to guide me other than my own inner voice and sense of calling, as well as having no certainty of success. But this has only given me greater confidence in following my intuition, carving my own path, making my own rules, and rewarded me for listening to that sometimes whisper, sometimes scream, that is divine guidance.

Committed to the healing arts, I currently work as an independent nurse, reiki practitioner, yoga instructor, and private life coach, however, all of my free time is poured into writing books on self-help and spiritual philosophy. I also have been facilitating a gay men’s support group (The Thoughtful Gay Man) for over three years now that originated in Chicago and now has close to 350 members on meetup.com. My latest projects include traveling between Chicago, San Francisco, and Tokyo Japan, conducting workshops and retreats for the LGBTQ+ community, and I am also celebrating the recent release of my latest book, “Paradise is Now,” available on Amazon and in some local bookstores.
What do you like best and least about our city?
Any city that features diversity like Chicago is an ideal place to work or start a business because it supports open-mindedness and is full of individuals excited to try new things and who actively seek opportunities to improve the quality of their life. Chicago is also known and respected on a global scale (go to Tokyo and people know all about Chicago, either have already been or longing to go there), which gives merit and international “foot traffic” to any business based there.
