Today we’d like to introduce you to Layla Bitoy.
Layla, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a Chicago Native and my family (paternal side) has over 50+ years of roots serving the Westside community in philanthropy and entrepreneurship.
After receiving the UNCF scholarship I graduated, with honors, from CAU and started a career in corporate America in Atlanta, GA.
On a vacation trip to Europe, Italy was one of the destinations and I was introduced to authentic gelato. I wanted to bring that experience back t my hometown. Choosing the west side was an opportunity to pay homage to my family.
The rest is history in the making!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning and operating any business comes with struggles. The City of Chicago and the Community organizations on the West Side have been very supportive.
My suggestion for anyone entering entrepreneurship is to expect the unexpected.

Bitoy’s Brands is curator in palette in entertainment experiences.
Our eldest location Bitoy’s Sweet Treats specifically focuses on gourmet popcorn, gelato, and other delectables. Our services include catering.
We are proud to be one of the few African-American owned gelato/popcorn retail outfit in Chicago.
Proudly serving the westside freshness and authenticity since 2015.
I would ask our customers what set us apart. From my perspective, our differentiator is that we make everything fresh in house and we have no restrictions in creativity. We can create any flavors when we decide!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
It’s hard to pinpoint one. I would say summer’s in Chicago with family and friends.
