Today we’d like to introduce you to Agnieszka Iwanska.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My passion for music started in kindergarten. I heard a lady playing the piano and I fell in love with the sound of it. Both of my parent has some musical background, but I was the one who requested to be signed up for the piano lessons. And that’s how it all started. During high school I discovered that singing on the stage brings me a lot of satisfaction. I decided that I want to make a living by singing. I got accepted to the only accredited jazz department in Poland. Got my master’s degree in vocal jazz performance a few years later. I moved to Chicago 15 years ago not knowing even one musician here. Everything was new and I had to basically start all over. Back in my homeland I was working as a sideman, but I also led my own band. I wanted to do the same thing over her. After moving here I’ve met some great musicians including Paul Scherer. We recorded 2 albums together. He was also a producer on both of them. I got the award for Polonia Artist of the Year twice. I also was the first Polish born artist to sing at Wrigley Field before the Cups game. It was a great honor to sing for almost 40k people.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a singer. My education was focused on jazz, but I also feel great in other genres. I’m also a songwriter. I write lyrics to the song. My main purpose in what I do is to move people’s hearts, bring emotions to their lives, and sometimes even make them cry. I love when fans approach me and tell me their stories and tell me how my music and voice had influence on their lives.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I think you always need to true to yourself, to who you are and to the art you want to create. In other words, just be yourself. Don’t be afraid to dream big and never let others discourage you in pursuing your dreams.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Together with my producer Paul Scherer we created a band called UroSoule. We can be seen playing concerts around Chicagoland area. Every summer we’re a part of Jazzin’ at the Shedd concert series and Shedd Aquarium.
This summer we’ll be there on August 1st. All of the shows information is always posted on my website www.aiwanska.com and social media. 2 albums that we recorded “All That I Am” and “Colors” are available on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify and all of the other digital outlets.
